And they all fit, because the city presents itself as a successful mixture of nature, architecture, great art and the evidence of its long history. If you stroll along the cobblestones of the market square and take in the largest contiguous historical building stock in the city in the central Schelfstadt district, you will quickly realize that there is a lot to discover in Schwerin. The castle is the city’s landmark, resting fabulously on an island and, together with the surrounding residential buildings, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Right next door, the palace gardens, State Museum, Victory Column, Altes Palais and State Chancellery draw the eye.
